HEIC to PNG Converter

Decode iPhone HEIC and re-encode to lossless PNG entirely on your device, with no server upload.

What it does

  • Decodes HEIC/HEIF locally and outputs lossless PNG: pixels never touch a server
  • Unlimited batch conversion with a local ZIP download, no 5-file cap
  • Lossless output that will not degrade further when you re-edit and re-save
  • Works offline after the page loads, with no watermark, sign-up, or ads

HEIC or HEIF files

HEIC TO PNG runs entirely in this browser tab with no upload, so the iPhone or iPad photos you convert never leave your device. Most people land here because a HEIC file from Apple's camera will not open on Windows, in an older editor, or inside a web app that demands a standard format, and they specifically want PNG (not JPG) because they need a lossless file they can keep editing without further quality loss.

What this conversion actually does (and does NOT do)

HEIC is a HEIF container whose images are compressed with HEVC, a lossy codec. PNG is the opposite: a lossless format built on DEFLATE (LZ77 plus Huffman). Converting HEIC to PNG does not recover any detail that the original HEVC encode already discarded, but it does freeze the current pixels losslessly, so you never take further generational quality loss when you re-edit or re-save the result.

The biggest surprise is file size. For ordinary photographic content, expect a PNG that is several times larger than the source HEIC, because PNG cannot compress perceptually the way HEVC does. That growth is normal and is the price of a lossless, universally readable file.

A few more details matter. The PNG is written at 8 bits per channel, so HDR or high-bit-depth HEIC content is reduced to standard 8-bit color. The output is always fully opaque: the decoder produces solid pixels, so this tool does not carry an alpha channel over from the HEIC. If a HEIC holds several images (a burst, a Live Photo, or another multi-image container), only the first image is converted; motion, extra frames and depth data are dropped. Finally, the image is decoded to raw pixels and re-encoded, so the PNG does not contain the original EXIF data, GPS location or capture date.

When to choose HEIC to PNG vs the alternative

Choose PNG when you want a lossless master you intend to keep editing, or when crisp edges matter (screenshots, text, UI captures saved as HEIC). Choose JPG instead for ordinary holiday and portrait photos where file size matters more than pixel-exact fidelity, since JPG stays far smaller. For everyday camera shots, use the HEIC to JPG converter instead. Both jpg and jpeg refer to the same format, so it does not matter which extension your destination app expects.

How to convert

  1. Drop one or many HEIC/HEIF photos into the box; they are read locally in your browser with no upload.
  2. The output format is pre-selected to PNG. PNG is lossless, so there is no quality slider and nothing to configure.
  3. Click Convert. A single file downloads directly; multiple files download as a ZIP with no count cap. HEIC is decoded locally in the browser, so even large batches stay on your machine.

No upload. It runs on your device.

Decoding happens in your browser with a HEIC decoder that ships with the page and runs in a background worker inside this tab. The decoded pixels are then encoded to PNG locally by the site's WebAssembly image module. Your photo bytes stay in local memory, and the tool fires zero network requests for the file itself. After the page has loaded once, it works offline (airplane mode included), there is nothing to delete because nothing was ever uploaded, and you can confirm all of this yourself by watching the DevTools Network tab during a conversion. This matters because HEIC files are almost always personal iPhone family photos, and they should never be transmitted to a stranger's server just to change a format.

No limits

Convert unlimited files in a single batch. There is no file-count cap, no fixed size cap (only your device's memory sets a practical limit), no watermark stamped on output, no sign-up wall, and no ads.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting HEIC to PNG lose quality?
The PNG encode itself is lossless, so it stores the decoded pixels exactly. The conversion cannot recover detail that the original HEVC encode already discarded, and high-bit-depth content is reduced to 8 bits per channel, but the PNG stops any future generational loss when you re-edit or re-save the file.
Why is my PNG file so much bigger than the original HEIC?
HEIC uses HEVC perceptual compression, while PNG is lossless DEFLATE and cannot throw away visual data the same way. For photographic content the PNG is usually several times the size of the source HEIC. That is expected, not a bug.
Does HEIC to PNG keep transparency?
No. This converter always produces a fully opaque PNG, because the HEIC decoder it uses outputs solid pixels. Ordinary iPhone camera photos have no transparency anyway, so for typical HEIC files nothing is lost.
Should I convert HEIC to PNG or JPG?
Pick PNG when you need a lossless file or sharp edges for screenshots and graphics. Pick JPG for ordinary photos where keeping the file small matters more, since PNG output is several times larger than a JPG of the same image.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere when I convert HEIC to PNG?
No. The HEIC is decoded in your browser by a decoder bundled with the page, and the PNG is encoded locally, with zero network requests for the file. You can verify this in the DevTools Network tab, where no upload appears during conversion.
Can I convert HEIC to PNG offline / without internet?
Yes. Once the page has loaded, the decoder and encoder are already in the tab, so the converter runs fully on your device and needs no connection. You can switch to airplane mode and conversions still work, because nothing is sent anywhere.
How do I batch convert many HEIC files to PNG at once?
Drop all your HEIC files into the box at the same time; there is no file-count cap. A single file downloads on its own, and a batch downloads as one ZIP containing every converted PNG, packaged locally on your machine.
How do I open or convert iPhone HEIC photos on Windows?
Windows often cannot open HEIC without an extra codec, which is exactly why converting to PNG helps: PNG is supported by every OS, browser, CMS, and editor. Because this tool runs in the browser, it works on Windows, Mac, or Linux without installing any HEIC codec.
Does the converted PNG still contain GPS location and EXIF metadata?
No. The photo is decoded to pixels and re-encoded, so the PNG does not carry the original EXIF data, GPS location or capture date. Keep the original HEIC if you need that information. To inspect or remove metadata in other photos, use the EXIF viewer and remover.
What happens to a Live Photo or a multi-image HEIC?
Only the first image in the file is converted. Motion, extra frames and depth data are not included in the PNG.
Why won't my HEIC files open in the first place?
HEIC is an HEVC-based format favored by Apple that many non-Apple systems, older apps, and web uploaders do not support without extra codecs. Converting to PNG produces a universally readable file, which removes the compatibility problem.
